I had been thinking for quite some time now about creating my own business where I could help small businesses with technology and business processes needs. For some reason I never pulled the trigger, either I was too busy or just didn’t have the energy. Fast forward to September 2019 when a former colleague reached out to me about helping her with her business website. I have had folks ask for this kind of help in the past and I usually got some free lunches or a few bucks under the table for my time. This time I decided to let her know what my rate would be for this work. When I did she said great, can you send me an invoice for tax purposes? Then it dawned on me that in order to do this I would need to set up a business. I debated a bit if it would be worth the effort for a couple of small projects, but I do really enjoy learning new things so I decided to go for it. I started with some research to find out what steps were needed to get started. The Washington Department of Revenue site has some great information and a wizard to help you figure out the process and cost. I filled out the requisite paperwork and received my license about a week later. So here I am a couple of months later and I now have a business, Duckworth Innovations. It has been quite a bit of fun going through the process. I always enjoy learning new things so here was a perfect opportunity
